We would ask you to
please use this website
for all your HBA updates.

The HBA is a
volunteer run recreational/house
league basketball program for
boys and girls aged 5 to 18
years. It is the City of
Hamilton’s largest minor
basketball program. Rep
players are not permitted
to play in the HBA.
With as many as 100 teams
competing in 9 divisions,
we have hundreds of local
children playing every
weekend from late September
until our year-end tournament
in early March. Our practices
are held Monday-Friday
evenings with most of our games
being played on Saturdays
between 11am and 5pm.

TOP 10 REASONS Kids play recreational basketball in the HBA

#1 FUN
Have you seen the smiles on the
faces of kids running around on
the court? Or the giant grin after
winning a game? Or the look on their
face when the coach high-fives them?
They are smiling because they are
having fun!
#2 ENCOURAGES A
HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

When they are out there
moving, they are burning calories,
developing muscle, and assisting
in brain development.

#3 SELF ESTEEM
Children will push themselves in
sports, and will feel good about
themselves for accomplishing their
goals.
#4 PERSEVERANCE
When children set goals for
themselves in sports, it may
take a while to achieve those
goals. By pushing through when
things get tough, they learn
they can eventually reach
their goal.

#5 GAME RULES
When kids are playing a sport, they are
learning the rules and understanding the
game.
#6 TIME MANAGEMENT
Playing a sport involves a big
time commitment. You have practices
and games. Kids will learn how to
manage their time so that they can
fit it all in.

#7 KEEPS THEM OUT OF TROUBLE
Children are less likely to get in trouble with
things like smoking and drugs. They will also
perform better in school.

#8 DEALING WITH ADVERSITY
Even the most athletic child will
come across a time when something is
challenging for them. Learning to cope
and overcome the adversity is a great
life experience.

#9 TEAMWORK
Kids that play on a team will grow to
understand the importance of teamwork.
They will also learn what it means to
be a team player.

#10 ATTITUDE
Children playing sports will
learn to win gracefully, as
well as lose gracefully. Coaches
will also help the kids understand
how important it is to go into a
game with a good attitude.
